Flooring as an important step in house renovation, needs thorough attention. However, not the same type of flooring would work for all parts of your house!

Thinking of redoing your kitchen flooring? Here are some tips to consider!

The kitchen is one of the areas with the most water incidents in the entire home! This is where cooking and cleaning happen on a daily basis, so you will have water spills, food spills/stains and items dropped (sometimes heavy and/or sharp) on a regular basis. Don't Use Laminate As Your Kitchen Flooring!

Laminate - although very popular for its looks and affordability, laminate is not a good option in the kitchen. The biggest concern is the water that gets spilled on the floor on a regular basis in the kitchen.

With laminate flooring, it is likely that you will have swelled up (PICTURE) laminate edges within a few months of usage - even if you are careful to wipe up right away. Laminate is also more easily chipped or dented when something sharp or heavy is dropped on it.

What Is the Best Flooring For Kitchens?


#1 Most Recommended: Tiles 

Tiles are a classic in kitchens - and for good reason! Well installed tiles are generally very strong and will hold best again kitchen incidents.

Note: make sure the tiles are well installed, meaning there are no hollow spots (too little cement) under parts of the tiles, as hollow spots could cause the tile to crack under impact.

Are you not a fan of the tile look? Nowadays there are so many amazing designs for tiles - you don’t have to “settle” for a boring tile design. You can have fun with it! If you are a bit more artistic and want to make a statement in your kitchen, consider nicer designs like hexagon or herringbone/chevron tiles. (PICTURE) These could make for a fun transition to other areas of the house with different types of flooring!

Glued-down hardwood can work in the kitchen as it is more resistant to water. Some things to consider, however are that hardwood requires more maintenance and dropping items (heavy and/or sharp) on it can leave dents and marks.
